When
starting out there will be a lot of lingo that will seem like a foreign
language don’t worry you will catch up fast and be using the lingo like a pro
in no time. It might seem overwhelming but take it one step at a time. If you
can try and shop without your kids but if you have to take them make sure you
take them at a reasonable time (first thing in the morning or right after nap)
some stores offer childcare while you shop USE IT!!! Even the pros can be
thrown off by a demanding child or a tired one. This will result in fewer
savings and more of your money out of your pocket. It will be discouraging when
this happens and if it happens to you just take from it what you can and try it
differently. I shop after everyone goes to bed for before they get up. That way
I have total peace and quiet to make sure that my transaction goes as smooth as
possible.
Start out by
finding coupons. If you don’t have money that is ok I will give you some tips
on how to get some for free. If you can spend a little bit of money I have a no
fuss way to get them delivered right to your door.
Pick out
your favorite store and make sure you have all their club cards and know where
to find their e-coupons that you can load to the card. These can be doubled up
with manufactures coupons so they are crucial for savings.
Download and
print out the stores coupon policy – this is very important. A lot of clerks
are unaware of the coupon policy and mis-read the coupons or tell you that the
coupon is not valid. Don’t be afraid to correct them and if they still put up a
fight don’t be afraid to ask for a manager. In most cases the clerk learns
something that night and you get your savings.
If you are
nervous take a friend with you. They might speak up or keep you on track if you
get distracted or start to panic. They can also help you keep your list and
coupons straight. If you can try and leave your kids at home or utilize the
stores childcare. Kids are a huge distraction and can end up costing you
instead of you saving.
Find a
system that works for you. It can be a binder, a case, a multi pocket folder,
your ipad, or envelops but just make sure whatever it is that it is easy for
you to maintain and the most functional. Some places on ebay even sell premade
coupon systems so you can pay not to deal with the fuss. If you are up too it
you can keep a spreadsheet of what your total was before store card and coupons
and what it was after. This will show you the magnitude of what you are truly
saving a year.
Start slow
and expect real savings. These are 30-70% savings. There will be times where
you can extreme coupon like no other but it will not be everytime. Don’t let
that make you feel like you have failed or that you cannot coupon. You can it
just has to be realistic and the saving will add up over time.
